LOPESAN HOTELS & RESORTS

During the month of June 2008 the Lopesan Costa Meloneras Hotel has been the official headquarters of the “2008 Campus of Excellence”, a unique and pioneer initiative organized by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria which succeeded in bringing together 16 Nobel Prize winners from different countries of the world. The major aim of this event, which took place from June 22nd until June 28th in this resort hotel of the Lopesan Hotel Group, was to gather high-ranking personalities from different fields, such as science, economy, culture and politics, as well as students from the last year of doctorate, graduates and post graduates, in order to contact and interchange experiences, to open new professional opportunities or to present their doctoral thesis.

The “Campus of Excellence” (the first edition of which also took place at the Lopesan Costa Meloneras in 2005) is being organized annually and on this occasion its subject was “Building bridges and Opening doors”, being Africa and Latin America the main core of this year’s edition due to their cultural, historical and geographical links with the Canary Islands. During this fourth edition, the centre of the academic meeting was the interest in interchanging knowledge of the following fields: life science, sustainability, investigation and technology, innovation and entrepreneurs, including activities such as plenary sessions, simultaneous forums, as well as cultural actions such as musical performances, theatre and magic shows.

There were 16 Nobel Prize Winners among the personalities participating in the “2008 Campus of Excellence” (two Nobel Prize winners for achievements in Economy, six for achievements in Chemical Science, three for achievements in Physics and four for achievements in Medicine, as well as one Peace Nobel Prize winner); there were also present: one King James I Award winner for Environmental Protection; one King James I Award winner for Economy; one Chief of State; one President; one Vice President; two Ministers; two Counsellors; one Ex-President; four Ex-Ministers; three Executives of International Organizations (the UNO, the International Migration and Health Centre, the International Organization for Migrations, various National Health Institutes and the World Tourism Organization); seven Directors of Non-Governmental Organizations; six representatives of corporations and large companies; two members of important investigation centres (the Technological Institute of Massachusetts and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory); 13 members of international universities; and 100 post grade students from different countries of the world.
